Creating a Self-Censorship Resistance Praxis

A learning experience originally created for and presented at the 2024 Enhancing Quality Staff (EQS) Symposium.

Description: Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the origin story and ongoing work of the Quatrefoil Library in Minneapolis contextualized by a creative and historical exploration of ‘what is a book’ and self-censorship. Participants will be encouraged to engage in an open and self-reflective discussion about their personal experiences with self-censorship.

We will close the session with an off-line exercise designed to institute a personalized process of creating a self-censorship resistance praxis.

East Side Freedom Library: A Contextualized Collection of Special Collections

This is a brief introduction to the East Side Freedom Library in St. Paul, Minnesota that explores the collection as a collection of special collections contextualized by each other, the building they are housed in, the neighborhood the building is in and the multiple waves of immigrants, migrants and refugees that have stories to share. The ESFL posits that when we hear each other’s stories, we are stronger, and hence our social justice efforts are more effective.

The Future is Now: Designing Today’s Library for Tomorrow

A mini look-book of library architecture around the world. This presentation is a brief look at a diverse selection of architectural efforts to build viable and sustainable library buildings. Throughout history architects around the world have worked assiduously to create and maintain spaces that concurrently preserve the past, serve the present and anticipate the future.

Libraries spotlighted:

Al-Qarawiyin Library (Fez, Morrocco); New York Public Library (New York City, New York, USA); Elmer L. Anderson Library (Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA) Luyuan Library (Beijing, China); Dokk1 (Aarhus, Denmark) Oodi Helsinki Central Library (Helsinki, Finland) Library of Muyinga (Muyinga, Republic of Burundi)

Online Learning Experiences (OLEs)

Tour of Getting to Know the Quatrefoil Library, Online Learning Experience

This video is a cursory tour of a prototype Online Learning Experience course designed and created in TalentLMS to help prospective volunteers and board members gain an understanding of the storied provenance of the Quatrefoil Library, how the library is organized, and what the library seeks to offer the community.

The learners are also introduced to a few of the issues the library is currently wrestling with, and invited to join in the conversation about what the future of the Quatrefoil Library might look like. The goal of the course is to help learners feel more equipped to volunteer and advocate for the Quatrefoil Library.

At the end of the course, the learner will have crafted their own elevator speech that they can use when asked to represent the library at events, when speaking with prospective partners or donors, or sharing with folks about the library in their personal or professional life.

Library as a Third Space | PDF
Request Access

This project involved supporting a client’s inquiry into the concept of the library as a third space. The process included an initial consultation to refine the research focus, followed by the identification and evaluation of relevant sources. The final deliverable consisted of an annotated bibliography accompanied by a formal cover letter contextualizing the findings.

Exploratory Research Proposal: Public Library Board Member’s Valuation of ALA’s Guidelines for Library Policies

Request Access Bibliography | PDF | PPS

Do your board members and library leadership staff understand and support the ALA’s Freedom to Read Statement? Encourage them to deepen their understanding and support—I can design and deliver presentations tailored specifically to your group’s unique needs and interests.

This proposal outlines a recommended approach for conducting an exploratory study examining public library board members’ valuation and awareness of the American Library Association’s guidelines for library policies—a vision that proved especially prescient in 2020.

Includes: Problem Statement, Literature Review, Methodology, and a consideration of the Limitations that may impact the research.

Although the study has yet to be conducted, it reflects my capacity to design research on timely and impactful topics in the library field. I remain enthusiastic about the potential of this project and would welcome the opportunity to pursue it with appropriate funding.

Note: Annual policy reviews should be a standard practice in library management. If your organization has not conducted a recent policy review, I strongly recommend initiating one. The Iterative Librarian can be retained to facilitate and support a comprehensive, informed review process. If you are interested, please contact me.

Read my “What is a Book” blog post here. If you think your staff would be interested in hosting a virtual (or in person, if local to me) presentation, please contact me.
